VILLAGE CHAPEL
Using a small chapel space in New York’s Greenwich Village as ground for investigation and discovery we investigate how we make architecture which evokes a feeling, conveys a mood or creates meditative place in the city.
Process
The primarily tools for discovery are found materials, spatial models, sensory drawings and writings. The early work of the project is in revealing attributes, capturing an essence, providing a visceral / sensory understanding of sound, light, area, volume and scale without the use of metaphors. These exercises and others will ultimately provide methods for gathering information from place and site which can be abstracted into memorable architecture.
Small Works
Through a close study of Surfaces, Apertures and Rooms, students explore and create qualitative and atmospheric architecture. Starting with material experimentation and later scale models, we create a potent sense or feeling by glimpses and explore the emotive power of space.
