“The quality that we call beauty...must always grow from the realities of life.” -Jun'ichirō Tanizaki, In Praise of Shadows
EXTRA ORDINARY
This Integrative Design Studio balances the pragmatic and creative with a focus on the development of material and constructed architectural projects. Starting with studies of the extra-ordinary qualities and conditions of light and shadow found on and around the site including reflection, motion, color, students develop solar massing and responsive programming incorporating these discoveries into the studio projects through ‘lighting proofs’, precise detailing and material selection.
Light and Use
The program for the studio project is a new ‘constituent driven’ arts education center and community archive. Divided equally into spaces requiring highly tuned daylight and spaces which can be dark, students are asked to consider how the massing, organization, materials and detailing of the building respond to the daylight requirements for studio work, art display and performance.
